GAF vs Owens Corning Shingles: A Spec-by-Spec Comparison

By Royal BullyJohn's RoofingPublished Updated 8 min readRead count loading

How do GAF and Owens Corning shingles compare, and does the brand matter for a North Texas roof?

GAF vs Owens Corning shingles is a close match. Their flagship lines, GAF Timberline HDZ and Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration, share the same size, fire rating and lab wind classes. The real differences are the nailing zone design, wind and algae warranty terms, impact ratings and who can register the top warranties.

Decision summary

What matters most

  • Timberline HDZ and Duration are both laminated architectural shingles at 13 1/4 by 39 3/8 inches, with 64 pieces per square.
  • GAF uses LayerLock and its wide StrikeZone nailing area. Owens Corning uses SureNail, a woven fabric strip in the nailing zone.
  • Both brands list a 130 mph wind warranty with the right installation. GAF adds a WindProven option with no maximum wind speed.
  • The strongest system warranties from both brands require brand accessories and, at the top tiers, a credentialed contractor.
  • Installation quality and the warranty you can actually register matter more than the logo on the bundle.

GAF vs Owens Corning at a glance

GAF and Owens Corning are two of the most common asphalt shingle brands on North Texas homes. Both sell full roof systems, including starter strips, underlayment, ridge caps and ventilation, and both tie their strongest warranties to using those parts together.

Comparing every line would take pages, so this guide compares the two flagship laminated shingles most homeowners are quoted: GAF Timberline HDZ and Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration. The same approach works for any two lines on your bid.

A quick note on where we stand: John's Roofing does not claim a manufacturer credential from either brand. We install to the manufacturer's written instructions and register the material warranty in your name, so this comparison is neutral.

Timberline HDZ vs Duration: the core specs

On paper, the two shingles are nearly the same size and shape. GAF's Timberline HDZ page and the Owens Corning Duration data sheet list these specs:

  • Size: both 13 1/4 by 39 3/8 inches.
  • Exposure: both 5 5/8 inches.
  • Pieces per square: both 64, in 3 bundles.
  • Fire: both Class A under UL 790.
  • Wind lab classes: both ASTM D3161 Class F and ASTM D7158 Class H.
  • Product standard: both ASTM D3462.

Because the lab classes match, either one can meet the wind classification required by the 2021 International Residential Code for most North Texas design wind speeds. The code table lists Class F under ASTM D3161 and Class H under ASTM D7158 as acceptable up to its highest listed speeds.

Color matters too. Both brands sell many colors, but availability varies by region, so ask for full-size samples from what is stocked locally.

Nailing zones: LayerLock vs SureNail

The biggest design difference is the strip where the nails go. Shingles hold in wind partly because nails land in the right place, and both brands built their flagship around that.

GAF's LayerLock technology creates what GAF calls the StrikeZone, which it describes as the industry's widest nailing area. GAF says a roofer placed 999 out of 1,000 nails correctly in its test.

Owens Corning's SureNail technology uses a woven, engineered reinforcing fabric strip in the nailing area. Owens Corning says the fabric overlays the bond between the laminate layers to form a triple layer of reinforcement, and that the shingle reaches its 130 mph wind warranty with only 4 nails.

Either design still depends on the installer. A wide target does not help if nails are high, low, crooked or overdriven, which is why we photograph nailing during installs.

Wind warranties compared

GAF lists three levels for Timberline HDZ. Four nails in the StrikeZone gives a 110 mph wind rating, four nails plus starter strips at the eaves and rakes gives 130 mph, and adding four qualifying GAF accessories qualifies for the 15-year WindProven warranty with no maximum wind speed.

GAF requires GAF starter strips, roof deck protection, ridge cap shingles, and leak barrier or attic ventilation for WindProven. GAF says the warranty does not need separate registration.

Owens Corning's Duration data sheet lists a 130 mph wind resistance limited warranty with a four-nail application. An Owens Corning warranty table also lists enhanced wind protection of 160 mph for the Duration series under certain system terms, with a 15-year wind warranty period.

Owens Corning's warranty also notes that shingle sealant strips need direct warm sunlight for several days to seal, and that shingles are more vulnerable to blow-offs before that happens. Ask your installer how they handle cold-weather installs.

Hail impact and algae protection

GAF states that Timberline HDZ shingles sold in packages with the UL 2218 Class 3 statement are rated Class 3 for impact resistance, and that its Timberline UHDZ line is rated Class 4. GAF also says it makes no warranty about hail performance and that hail damage is not covered under its limited warranty.

Owens Corning lists TruDefinition Duration FLEX and Duration STORM as part of a UL 2218 Class 4 roof system when installed with ImpactRidge hip and ridge shingles. Standard Duration is not listed with an impact class on its data sheet.

For algae, GAF offers a 25-year StainGuard Plus algae warranty on Timberline HDZ packages bearing that logo. Owens Corning offers an algae resistance limited warranty on Duration, and the length depends on the product and the hip and ridge used. Our guide to black streaks on roof shingles explains why algae matters here.

If hail is your main worry, compare impact-rated lines, not flagship lines. The Texas Department of Insurance says your insurer might offer a discount for materials less likely to be damaged by hail, so ask before you choose, using TDI's roof insurance tips.

System warranties and who can register them

Both brands sell a standard shingle warranty that comes with purchase, plus stronger system warranties that add accessories and, at the top tiers, a credentialed installer.

GAF's warranty comparison guide shows the pattern:

  • GAF Shingle and Accessory Limited Warranty: comes with the product.
  • GAF Roofing System Limited Warranty: Timberline shingles plus at least 3 qualifying accessories.
  • System Plus: adds tear-off and disposal coverage and needs a GAF Certified, Certified Plus or Master Elite contractor.
  • Silver Pledge and Golden Pledge: add workmanship coverage and need Certified Plus or Master Elite contractors.

Owens Corning's Platinum Protection warranty requires installation by an Owens Corning Roofing Platinum Preferred Contractor, a full Owens Corning system with qualifying underlayment and hip and ridge, and registration by that contractor within 60 days. Owens Corning lists workmanship coverage for the first 25 years on qualifying single-family homes.

Ask every bidder which warranty they can actually register, in writing. John's Roofing registers the manufacturer material warranty in your name and gives its own 5-year workmanship warranty at the final walkthrough.

Why installation matters more than the brand

Code and both manufacturers agree on one point: install it exactly as written. The 2021 International Residential Code says roof coverings must be applied following the code and the manufacturer's installation instructions, with at least four fasteners per strip shingle.

In practice, many roof problems come from the details: nails in the wrong spot, missing starter strips, poor flashing at walls and chimneys, and weak ventilation. Any of those can shorten the life of a premium shingle from either brand.

Hypothetical example: Two Frisco homes get the same brand of shingle in the same year. One gets brand starter strips, correct nailing and new flashing, while the other reuses old flashing. After a few windy springs, only the second needs repairs. Our guide on how to choose a roof repair contractor lists the questions to ask any installer.

Choosing a shingle brand for a North Texas roof

Hailstones scattered on dark architectural asphalt shingles after a spring storm, with a few dark spots where granules were knocked loose

Local weather should drive the choice more than brand loyalty. The National Weather Service Fort Worth office says large hail and damaging winds occur nearly every year somewhere in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, and that July and August often reach 100 degrees.

So start with three questions: what wind warranty can you register, does the line carry a UL 2218 rating you want for hail, and which colors are stocked locally. Our guide to the best roofing material for high winds adds context on wind.

Both GAF Timberline HDZ and Owens Corning Duration are listed by the manufacturers as meeting the same lab wind classes. GAF's spec list also shows Timberline HDZ as Texas Department of Insurance listed. Ask your roofer for the current product listing for your exact line.

Questions people actually ask

Frequently asked questions about gaf vs owens corning shingles

Is GAF or Owens Corning better?

Neither is clearly better across the board. Their flagship shingles share the same size, fire rating and lab wind classes. GAF offers the WindProven warranty and a Class 3 impact rating on labeled Timberline HDZ packages, while Owens Corning's SureNail fabric strip and Platinum Protection warranty appeal to others. Compare the warranty you can register.

Are GAF Timberline HDZ and Owens Corning Duration the same size?

Yes. Both manufacturers list 13 1/4 by 39 3/8 inches, a 5 5/8-inch exposure and 64 pieces per square in 3 bundles.

Which shingle has the better wind warranty?

GAF lists 130 mph for Timberline HDZ with starter strips and a 15-year WindProven warranty with no maximum wind speed when four qualifying accessories are used. Owens Corning lists 130 mph for Duration with four nails and higher enhanced coverage under certain system warranties. Read the current terms for both.

Are GAF or Owens Corning shingles impact resistant?

Some lines are. GAF says labeled Timberline HDZ packages are UL 2218 Class 3 and Timberline UHDZ is Class 4. Owens Corning lists Duration FLEX and Duration STORM as Class 4 roof systems with ImpactRidge hip and ridge. Check the package for the rating.

Do I need a certified contractor for a GAF or Owens Corning warranty?

Not for the standard shingle warranty. The stronger system warranties, such as GAF System Plus, Silver Pledge and Golden Pledge, or Owens Corning Platinum Protection, require installation by a contractor holding that manufacturer's credential.

Can I mix GAF and Owens Corning products on one roof?

You can, but mixing brands can reduce warranty coverage. Both brands tie their system warranties to using their own starter strips, underlayment, ridge caps and other accessories. Ask your roofer which warranty a mixed system would qualify for.
