Storm & Hail Damage in Collin & Rockwall County

For homeowners who just took a hail or wind storm and need to know whether their roof was actually damaged.

What is storm and hail damage?

Hail damage shows up as bruised or fractured shingle mats, granule loss into gutters, and dents on soft metals like vents and flashing. Wind damage lifts or creases shingles. John's Roofing photographs each hit, counts damage per test square, and gives you documentation your insurance adjuster can act on.

How it works

  1. Step 01

    Same-week storm inspection

Ground, ladder, and aerial documentation of every slope after the storm.

  2. Step 02

    Test squares and hit counts

Damage counted the way an adjuster counts it, so the numbers line up.

  3. Step 03

    Emergency tarping if needed

Active leaks stabilized before anything else happens.

  4. Step 04

    Adjuster-ready report

Photos, counts, and scope packaged for your carrier.

  5. Step 05

We meet the adjuster on site

So the damage we found is the damage that gets written.

Storm and hail damage

What a storm and hail damage inspection can evaluate

  • Shingles
  • Roof slopes
  • Flashing
  • Vents
  • Pipe boots
  • Gutters
  • Downspouts
  • Fascia
  • Siding
  • Windows and screens
  • Other visible exterior components

Not every storm causes damage, and not every hail event means a new roof. Damage should be documented first, so the decision between repair and replacement is based on the actual condition of the roof.

What to expect

What happens at each step

  1. 01 · Same-week storm inspection

The roof and exterior are looked at after the storm so you know whether there is damage.

  2. 02 · Test squares and hit counts

Damage is recorded in a consistent, measurable way.

  3. 03 · Emergency tarping if needed

If there is an active leak, it is addressed first to limit further water damage.

  4. 04 · Adjuster-ready report

You receive the photos and findings from the inspection to keep for your records and your claim.

  5. 05 · We meet the adjuster on site

The documented damage can be reviewed with the adjuster in person.

Signs

Common hail and storm damage

  • Bruised or fractured shingles
  • Missing shingles
  • Lifted or creased shingles
  • Exposed roofing materials
  • Damaged flashing
  • Dented gutters
  • Damaged vents
  • Damaged screens
  • Damaged siding
  • Broken exterior components
  • Water intrusion after a storm

For a homeowner's guide, read how to tell if your roof has hail damage. If water is already coming in, see what to do about a roof leak from inside.

Documentation

How to document storm damage

Photographs
Take dated photos of anything you can see safely from the ground or inside.
Date of the storm
Write down when the storm happened.
Locations of visible damage
Note which side of the house and which areas were affected.
Interior water staining
Photograph any new ceiling or wall stains.
Gutter and downspout damage
Dents, loose sections, and granules collected at downspout outlets.
Window and screen damage
Tears, dents, and cracked glass.
Other exterior damage
Siding, fascia, trim, fences, and AC units.
Inspection documentation
Keep a copy of any inspection photos and findings.
Before repairs
Document conditions before repairs begin, when it is safe to do so.

Stay off the roof. A roof inspection can document what cannot be seen safely from the ground.

Repair or replace

Roof repair or replacement after storm damage?

Factors in the decision
FactorRepair may fitReplacement may be considered
Extent of damageLimited, isolated areasWidespread across the roof
Number of damaged areasOne or a fewMany slopes affected
Roof ageNewer roof with life remainingOlder roof near the end of its life
Underlying conditionSound decking and materialsExisting wear or prior damage
Repeated repairsFirst repairSeveral repairs already made
Material availabilityMatching shingles availableProduct discontinued or hard to match
Flashing and penetrationsMinor, repairable damageDamage across many penetrations
Water intrusionNone or limitedWater has reached the structure

Repair versus replacement depends on the documented condition and the overall project scope. Replacement is not automatic. See roof repair and roof replacement.

Beyond the roof

Storm damage to gutters, windows, and exterior

Storms can also damage gutters, downspouts, fascia, windows, screens, siding, and exterior trim. These are worth checking along with the roof. See gutters and downspouts, window replacement, and exterior painting.

Cost

What affects storm damage repair cost?

  • Extent of damage
  • Roof size
  • Roofing material
  • Number of damaged components
  • Accessibility
  • Flashing repairs
  • Gutter and exterior repairs
  • Underlying damage
  • Replacement materials
  • Project complexity

Confirm the scope and price in writing before work begins. For a rough replacement range, try the roof cost calculator.

Insurance

Storm damage and insurance

Document storm damage as soon as it is safe. An inspection can record the visible conditions of the roof and exterior, and that documentation may help during the claim process.

Coverage depends on your policy, and the insurer makes the coverage decision. Filing deadlines and notice requirements also vary by policy, so check yours or ask your agent. This is general information, not legal advice.

For more on the process, see insurance claim help and Texas roof claim deadlines.

Questions people actually ask

Storm and hail damage questions

How do I know if my roof has hail damage?

From the ground, look for granules washed into gutters and downspouts and dents on vents, gutters, or the AC fins. Actual shingle bruising only shows up on the roof. A documented inspection settles it without you climbing anything.

How long do I have to file a hail claim in Texas?

Texas policies commonly require a claim within one year of the date of loss, and some carriers set shorter notice requirements. Read your policy or call your carrier. Waiting also makes it harder to tie the damage to a specific storm.

Will filing a hail claim raise my rates?

Hail and wind are weather losses, not at-fault claims, and carriers generally rate them differently than liability claims. Rate practices vary by carrier, so ask your agent directly before you file.

What if my claim gets denied?

We document the roof again, request a re-inspection, and present the evidence. We will also tell you plainly if we believe the denial is correct. You are never charged for the inspection or the documentation.

Can hail damage exist without a roof leak?

Yes. Bruised or fractured shingles may not leak right away. The damage can shorten the roof's life and show up as a leak later, which is why an inspection after a significant storm is worth considering.

Can hail damage affect gutters, windows, and screens?

Yes. Hail can dent gutters and downspouts, tear or dent screens, and mark window frames, siding, and trim. These are usually documented along with the roof.

Does storm damage always require a new roof?

No. Not every storm damages a roof, and not all damage requires replacement. Many cases can be handled with a repair. The decision depends on the documented condition.

Does insurance cover hail damage?

It depends on your policy and the insurer's determination. Documentation of the damage may help during the claim process, but coverage and approval are decided by the insurer.

What should I document after a storm?

The storm date, photos of any visible damage from the ground, interior water stains, and damage to gutters, windows, screens, and siding. Only document what you can reach safely.

What affects storm damage repair cost?

The extent of damage, roof size and material, how many components are affected, access, flashing and exterior repairs, and any underlying damage. Confirm the scope and price in writing before work begins.
